"Many people have commented on how good-natured our son is, and I think it largely because he's always been able to communicate his needs and wants to us. And we were amazed to see how early babies' personalities can emerge when they're given a way to express themselves. Now that our son is 2 1/2 and speaks, he still signs often - useful for when his mouth is full or we need to be quiet. He can use his signs to clarify things if I have trouble understanding a word he's trying to say. And anyone who thinks teaching a child sign language will delay his speech should talk to my son! He talks up a storm, putting several sentences together and possessing a command of English I didn't know was possible at his age."
